Magnifistorm A-Brewin'!

With the next booster pack Doom of Dimensions set to release at the end of next month (Sept. 26), now seems like as good a time as any to talk about its upcoming archetypes.

And, since I’ve already discussed the Doom-Z monsters, that means it’s time for the Magnifistorms.

Ever since the dawn of the franchise, Wind-Attribute monsters and archetypes have been strongly associated with storms and the wind itself.  From Harpie Ladies to Mist Valleys to Majispecters.  And now, joining those ranks, we have the new Magnifistorm archetype debuting in Doom of Dimensions.

I can’t rightly remember the last archetype that was based around an already pre-existing card (if one ever even did exist), but the Magnifistorms are based around the staple Quick-Play Spell Card Mystical Space Typhoon.

And, let’s be honest: If you don’t even know what that is, then what are you even doing here?

Level and Type-wise, they seem to be all over the map.  And they seem to have yet to be given any Extra Deck monsters.  So let’s take a little look and see if there’s anything we might be able to do with them.

Magnifistorm Great Pyre Phoenix is a Level 9 Wind Attribute Pyro Type (Whaa?) Effect Monster with 3000 Attack Points and 0 Defense Points.  This monster can be Special Summoned whenever you activate a Quick-Play Spell from your hand, and it can bounce 2 cards of your opponent’s back to the Deck (not the hand; the Deck!) whenever you activate a Quick-Play Spell while [it itself] is on the field.  It can even be Special Summoned back from the Graveyard whenever a Mystical Space Typhoon is activated.

But you can only use each effect once per turn, though.

A big note with this archetype is that nowhere does it state that the MST must be activated by you.  A canny player could probably find some way to force their opponent to at least draw out, if not use, an MST.

Moving on to Magnifistorm Vortex Beauty Valrune, a Level 9 Wind Attribute Aqua Type Effect Monster whose stats are the inverse of Pyre Phoenix’s.  (And her Attribute-Type combination is also weird, right?  Bet someone could make use of that.)

She can be Special Summoned whenever you activate a Quick-Play Spell from your hand.  If your opponent activates a monster effect while you have an MST in your Graveyard, you can negate it.  Then, if you have more than 1 MST in your Graveyard, then you get to destroy that negated card, as well.  And that’s on top of the MST-revival effect that she also shares with Pyre Phoenix.

Moving into more familiar Attribute-Type combinations, Magnifistorming Crothea is a Level 6 Wind Attribute Winged Beast Type Effect Monster with 2200 Attack Points and 1200 Defense Points.  Whenever a Quick-Play Spell is activated (again, not just by you), this card can summon itself from your hand.  It can’t be destroyed if your opponent has no Spells/Traps, and it adds another Magnifistorm card and/or an MST from Deck your Deck to your hand upon summoning.  The only downside is that she locks you out of any Special Summons save for Wind Attribute until the end of the turn of activated

The three lower-Level Magnifistorm monsters all share an effect that lets them be Special Summoned whenever you either have an MST in your Graveyard OR your opponent controls no Spell/Trap Cards on their field.

Canny players could work in mill effects or one of the Foolish Burial-related cards to quickly get an MST into their Graveyard, should they so choose.  And, worse comes to worse, you could always just use your MST, but where’s the fun in that?

Magnifistorming Erdam , a Level 3 Wind Attribute Beast Type Effect Monster with 1300 ATK and 800 DEF, when it’s summoned, allows you to add any other Magnifistorm card or an MST from your Deck to your hand.

Level 2 Wind Attribute Fairy Type Effect Monster Magnifistorming Megala (500 ATK and 1500 DEF) lets you Special Summon any other Magnifistorm monster from your Deck whenever a Magnifistorm Quick-Play Spell or an MST is activated, at the cost of locking you out of non-Wind Attribute Special Summons.

And Magnifistorming Suen, the Level 3 Wind Attribute Beast-Warrior Type Effect Monster with 1600 ATK and 400 DEF, when Summoned, lets you add a Magnifistorm Spell/Trap or an MST from your Deck to your hand.

As one would expect, given their abilities, the Magnifistorm archetype does have three separate in-archetype Quick-Play Spells that they can play off of (and one Trap).

Magnifistorming Sight Trance is another one of those Quick-Play Spell Cards that has multiple effects and the caveat that you can only use each one once per turn.  Those effects are either to add an MST from your Deck or your Graveyard to your hand, or else to draw 2 cards, discard a Magnifistorm card or a Quick-Play Spell if you have one of either or else discard your entire hand if you possess neither option.

And then it decides to double down on the weirdness with a bonus effect that lets you reset it if it is ever destroyed by the effect of an MST.

A canny player could conceivably MST their own Sight Trance in order to Set it again, and then activate it for a one-turn double-dose of Quick-Play Spells.

Magnifistorming Stanza Tribute is another Quick-Play Spell that operates the same as Sight Trance, but with your choice of two different effects.  Thankfully, this time it’s simpler: either letting you add an MST from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand, or letting you add a Level 4 or below Magnifistorm monster from your Deck.

And it also shares the same “destroyed by MST” effect.

Magnifistorming Summoning Technique shares the “destroyed by MST” effect and the “two effects, only activate each once per turn” effect with the former two.  This time, you can either add an MST from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand, or else send a Magnifistorm monster from your Deck to your Graveyard.

I have to admit, from what I’ve seen of the archetype, I can only see this card being useful in aiding the two boss monsters Valrune and Pyre Phoenix.

But let’s see what Magnifistorming Sovereign Tyranny can do.  Who knows-it might prove me wrong.

Nope.  That Continuous Trap Card supports your Deck and your Wind-Type monsters in many ways, but not in the Graveyard renewal way.

What it can do is, once per turn, shuffle three Quick-Play Spells from the Graveyard back into your Deck and draw one new card, and then boost the ATK and DEF of your Wind Attribute monsters by 300.  It Sets itself whenever it’s destroyed by an MST (whether it be face-up or face-down at the time, FYI) and can negate the effects of one face-up card your opponent controls whenever an MST is activated.

A quick Google search on my phone pointed me towards the idea that one could combine this archetype with the Runicks, the Mecha Phantom Beasts, or even the Forbidden series of cards, as all three archetypes/sets heavily feature their own assortment of Quick-Play Spell Cards that you could synergize with.

I also looked up and confirmed that the Purrelys also have their fair share of Quick-Play Spells, but let’s not go crazy.

I mean, the archetype isn’t even out in America yet.
